Particle and Powder Characterisation Techniques

Major fields of interest, explained below

There are a variety of fields dealt with at Particle and Surface Sciences (PsS).
Brief highlights of the various instruments available are given below, and if you wish a more detailed description, merely follow the links provided.

Major topics dealt with on this page:-

Particle Size Distribution Analysis

Particle size distribution analysis has become an integral part of both research and process control. There are a number of techniques varying from x-ray sedimentation to aerodynamic to image based analysis available.

Ankersmid Eyetech

Micromeritics Sedigraph
Analytical range of 0.1 to 300 micrometres. Wet analytical method using x-ray beam and sedimentation.
Micromeritics Elzone(R)
Electrozone measurement, sizes and counts both organic and inorganic materials, rapid measurement of particle diameters from 0.4 to 1200 µm
Micromeritics MasterTech 52 Autosampler
18 samples per tray; continues indefinitely if tray is replenished, 0.5 to 4 g of powder in 60 to 80 mL of liquid, used with any suitable for SediGraph 5100/5120 analysis.
ATM Corporation Test Sieves

Wire cloth measurement traceable to NIST, serialised for traceability, die-formed frames for fit and quality. Guaranteed to meet applicable ASTM , ISO and ANSI specifications

Online Particle Size Distribution Analysis

Ankersmid offers systems for Particle size analysis and taylored solutions for on-line and add-line particle size and shape analysis.

Particle Counting Analysis

A complete range of analysers and sensors are available which can be configured to measure particles in liquid streams. Typically used where liquid cleanliness levels are important, such as hydraulic fluids and pharmaceutical fluids.

Micromeritics Elzone(R)

Electrozone measurement, sizes and counts both organic and inorganic materials, rapid measurement of particle diameters from 0.4 to 1200 µm

Particle Shape Analysis

A synchronous strobe light source and a video microscope continuously captures images of the particles in motion. Full particle classification by maximum, minimum, diameters, area, perimeter, aspect ratio and shape factors are possible.

Ankersmid offers systems for Particle analysis, particle size and particle shape monitoring with laser, supplying the latest In-Lab particle analysers and taylored solutions for on-line and add-line particle size and shape analysis.

Surface Area and Pore Size Analysis

Surface area and pore size distibution based on physisorption (adsorption and desorption of gases) may use either the dynamic or static gas adsorption systems.

Micromeritics ASAP 2020
Single station analysis. Nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms. BET and Langmuir surface area. BJH pore size distribution analysis. Average pore volume, area, size and Total Pore Volume (TPV). Micro-pore analysis.
Micromeritics ASAP 2020 Micropore System
Nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms. BET and Langmuir surface area. BJH pore size distribution analysis. Average pore volume, area, size and Total Pore Volume (TPV). Micro-pore analysis.
Micromeritics ASAP 2405
Six (6) analysis station and twelve (12) degas station Unit. Nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms. BET and Langmuir surface area. BJH pore size distribution analysis. Average pore volume, area, size and Total Pore Volume (TPV). Micro-pore analysis.
Micromeritics Flowsorb II 2300
Dynamic flowing technique providing BET and Langmuir surface area.
Micromeritics Gemini 2380
High speed analysis. Nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms. BET and Langmuir surface area. BJH pore size distribution analysis. Average pore volume, area, size and Total Pore Volume (TPV). Micro-pore analysis.
Micromeritics Tristar 3000
Three sample ports, for faster analysis. Nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms. BET and Langmuir surface area. BJH pore size distribution analysis. Average pore volume, area, size and Total Pore Volume (TPV). Micro-pore analysis.

Pore Size and Density Analysis

Mercury intrusion porosimetry is based on the intrusion of a non-wetting, non-reactive fluid into a porous material at selected pressures.

Micromeritics AutoPore IV Series

Mercury intrusion analysis providing pore size distribution as well as skeletal and bulk density values. Analytical range 0.003 to 360 micrometres.

Chemisorption

Chemisorption of metals and other surface active materials is a two step process. Firstly, the sample needs to be reduced completely to form the active metal phase. The second step involves precise gas dosing to measure the surface activity. This is called static volumetric analysis. Micromeritics offer three systems for Chemisorption.

Micromeritics AutoChem 2910
The AutoChem 2910 Automated Catalyst Characterisation System performs a full array of highly precise, temperature-programmed and chemisorption studies.
Micromeritics ASAP 2020C
Full chemisorption analysis using the advanced flow-thru sample tubes (patented).

Density

Gas pycnometers measure volume and density using the gas displacement technique. Careful control of temperature and gas pressures yield highly accurate results.

Absolute Density

Micromeritics AccuPyc 1340
            Automatic absolute density of powders.

Micromeritics MultiVolume 1305
  Semi automatic variable sample volume.

Envelope Density

Micromeritics GeoPyc 1360
Automatic absolute density of powders.

Tap Density

Micromeritics GeoPyc 1360
Automatic tap density of powders.

Zeta Potential

The stability of a slurry or emulsion is determined by its Zeta Potential, which is the net effective charge between particles. Micromeritics offer zeta potential analysers.

Micromeritics 1202
Concentrated samples up to 50% solids.

Image Analysis

The analysis of particles from both a qualitative and quantitative aspects must include image analysis techniques. Image analysis is also A powerful tool for the measurement and characterisation of many biological and natural materials.

Surface Chemistry

DataPhysics
An extensive range of techniques such as; contact angle (solid-solid and solid-liquid), weting circumferences, static and dynamic interfacial and surface tensions, relaxation behaviour of interfaces, critical micelle concentrations.
